Ok this was the idea get one of the dopest hip hop groups right now (also one my favourite hip hop groups) to review 3 videos, Tinie Tempah’s ‘Frisky’, Lowkey ‘Something Wonderful’, and Giggs ‘Look What the Cat Dragged in’. Me and Derek (one of the dopest Photographers out right now, who works for the Cut magazine as well) wanted to see an American Perspective on UK music. It’s just perfect Tanya Morgan nailed it, looks like they should blog for The Cut what you think people?

Tinie Tempah Video:

Donwill: The visuals for this joint is crazy. I like how it’s shot and styled. As far as the song, it’s not bad at all. It sounds like top 40 US kinda stuff, which isn’t bad when done well (like this). The MC (Tinie Tempah?) has a pretty nice flow/presence and the guy singing sounds like Trey Songz. It’s good pop record and that la-la hook may be stuck in my head all day. Not to mention, that change up at the end is INSANE!

Von Pea: This video has a real cool look to it. It’s cool but not in the same way we’ve seen a million times. It’s artsy cool, like they’re hanging in a modern art museum, or something. The song is real catchy but the visuals keep this one interesting.

Ilyas: Eh…I’m a video director myself, so I watch videos a lot more than the average person. And I must say I was quite impressed.  It started a bit typical, but as the video treatment unfolded it had a gothic look.. which I love (See my spikes?). The song was a little too formulaic to me.  Ever heard of Drake? The end of the song was dope though.

Lowkey Video:

Von Pea: A serious topic with a video that matches the tone of it. This one looks good, too. If I had to nitpick, the camera is moving around a lot but that’s just because someone was holding it, that’s not a big deal. It looks cool in some of the scenes but others I wish it was just still on the MC. Like I said though, that’s just nitpicking. Overall, this video captures the song perfectly. Funny part is, I have a song with a very similar line (the “that’s somebody’s sister”) that isn’t out yet. I will be helping get the same message out soon!

Ilyas: First off, I love the song’s content.  It’s heartfelt.  Dude is talking about some real shit.  I wish the video had more going on though.  I like the textures the director used for the look but it seemed repetitive and a little too mundane for my tastes.  The best parts were when it cut to the visuals of the women’s faces.  Other than that it was pretty monotonous.

Donwill: It’s funny how messages are universal. This is along the same lines as John Mayer’s “Daughters” or Tupac’s “Keep Yo’ head Up” and it has just as powerful a message. I like this joint a lot. I feel like the actual song is a lot more powerful than direction of the video, but nonetheless this is a tight combo

Giggs Video:

Ilyas: I can’t lie, I started to chuckle as the video started. And that’s all I’m gonna say ’bout that.

Donwill: The video looks great but the song didn’t really hit me lyrically, to be honest. I ran to check out some other clips by him and as an MC he’s pretty damn dope. This song with him and B.o.B. is pretty fresh and I heard some Talkin Da Ardest freestyle that was pretty crazy too. The song gets its point across well, though. It’s not about overpowering the track all the time and he fits in well with the production on “Look What The Cat Dragged In.”  Overall, I fuck with Giggs’ shit

Von Pea: I should have been at this party! The beat isn’t the type of beat I like, but I do like his rhyme style on this one, and the video goes along with the song well. He makes the track work. I like the way he paces the flow on here.
