My good friend Nina Manandhar (co-founder of Hardcore is more than music & The Cut Newspaper) is one of the most hardworking & talented females I know of, yes she is the business! Nina is actually one of the reasons why I decided to get into Film & Photography, she’s inspired much creativity not just with me but with many other young people as she is so dedicated to giving young people a voice in the media. Like I said, Nina is the business!
This Thursday Nina holds a private viewing of her latest Photography exhibition “We Dream The Same Dream” at the Exposure Gallery (Details on the flyer)
Music lovers from across London came together to show their support for charity, at an event held in Camden this Sunday. Last year’s DUMA winners, Achilles Sound, were in full attendance as headliners for the evening, providing all that attended with an exciting and vibrant performance.
Achilles Sound
The night kicked off with young soloist, Francis Gahan, who intelligently worked his way though the course of his set, using a wide range of loops to construct a full sounding blend of acoustic music. Matched by his cutting vocals, Gahan set a high standard for the following acts to try and better.
This challenge was met head on the by the lively efforts of The Mekkits, whose set was jammed packed with high-spirited ballads, and zestful vocals. The band’s display was nothing more than a success, building a high level of excitement to warm the crowd for their Dorset based counterparts.
Achilles Sound
Since winning the Dorset Unsigned Music Awards in May 2009, Achilles Sound have worked tenaciously to build upon their achievements of the previous year. With a new EP set to hit the airwaves in the next couple of months, the South West maestros took to the stage with an assuring level of confidence, that was followed by an impressive display of their finest works. For the duration of the performance the band intricately moved their way through complex melodies, combined with their own quirky style of composition. Soon to be released, “Yoga For Cats”, was the highlight of the performance, confirming the reason as to why so many people have become captivated by the sound of Achilles. Definitely one to look out for in the future.
Heres a very insightful 1-2-1 interview by Jeff Staple with NY graffiti legend Futura 2000 a.k.a Leonard Mcgurr a.k.a 13th witnesses father…
1-2-1 w/jeffstaple feat. Futura from jeffstaple on Vimeo.
Although personally I’m not too visually impressed by Futura’s early graffiti art work maybe because he was overshadowed by other artists such as Keith haring and Basquiat who blew up in the same era as him ,my elderly graffiti/street art brethren’s beg to differ ,most appriciate his abstract approach to graffiti, while most graffiti writers in the 80s were more focused on lettering, futuras work was way ahead of it’s time hence the name FUTUR-A his graffiti looked more like illustrations, his also praised for his skill with the can his aerosol strokes were different to his peers and were more like the fine line of an airbrush..
