Fashion Foward™/ Text
/ Team Cut
9th September 2008
With London Fashion Week fast approaching The Cut spoke to Blog Queen
Extraordinaire Susie Bubble, the girl who loves to dress up, about her
straight up approach to style.
Looking at your blog you
seem pretty prolific- how do you find the time to blog while working a
full time job?
Well, the thing is I don't have enough time to blog about everything that
comes into mind and I tend to always have 15 ideas on the go and because
I never run out of things to write about, I try to make the time to blog
about them. It is the enthusiasm of wanting to break things to readers
that keeps me going....
How much time do you spend a week on it?
About 7-8 hours is spent on the actual blogging, image editing etc. Accumulating
information and absorbing the stuff that's going on in fashion however
is pretty much my daily life and is also part of my full time job as commissioning
editor of Dazed Digital.
Having you been dressing Barbie since day dot or is your passion
for fashion a recent thing?
I've been into fashion ever since I had the freedom to dress myself and
to spend money on clothes and going back and forth between Hong Kong and
London really accelerated that. The ability to buy fashion-forward clothes
at cheap cheap prices in Hong Kong meant it wetted my appetite for developing
a personal style.
I see you’ve a piece on Andrea Crews- how do you feel about fashion
and social responsibility? The whole sweatshop issue?
I must admit, I'm no saint. I shop in the shops, which are guilty of crimes
that I don't even know the full details about. Both high-end designers
and high street stores are guilty of sweatshopping. Social responsibility
has a long way to go before everyone who loves fashion can fully integrate
it as part of their consumer habits.
I always say as long as you get shoes and jackets right you’re sorted.
Do you have any fashion fables?
I don't like handing out advice. I like having the freedom to make mistakes
and get it wrong. It would be wrong of me to dole out advice....
What do your parents make of it all?
They're not really aware of it all!
Who takes the pics of you or do you use a remote?
I use a self-timer or the boyfriend.
You seem to have been commissioned to do lots of fashion editorial
recently- is it possible to make money through your blog and how much
has it helped you build up your career and reputation?
What do you mean by commissioned? Nobody has paid me to write about their
work if that's what you mean.... I only write about things if I'm genuinely
excited by what they do. It's true that they might send me something as
a thank you but there is no initial monetary/freebie motivation to write
about them...at the end of the day, their work has to be right for Style
Bubble. I don't make money out of the blog.... but yes, it is possible.
I just haven't really aimed for that sort of incentive. I have been grateful
for the opportunities Style Bubble has given me and yes, it has helped
me a lot in terms of building a reputation but I still have to prove myself
in a professional capacity. Writing the way I do and blogging the way
I do is amateur to say the least...
All time style icon?
Anyone who happens to catch my eye on the streets? I don't really believe
in style icons.

Buzz Kickers from the A/W Range. Below: Sancho Panza Kickers
Back to School with a difference
with Kickers™/ Text / Chloe Forde 2nd September 2008
September is here, the summer is
over and it’s back to school! The first few days of September are
usually a rush, trying to cram everything in before that 7.30 alarm goes
and its time to kick your brain back into action!
The last thing that any of you want to think about is ‘a new pair
of school shoes’. Well this summer we at The Cut have been paying
close attention to the new and exciting range from Kickers, always known
for their standard school shoe, we were pleasantly surprised to hear that
they have teamed up with American-based funk masters Chromeo, to create
some funky footwork! Kickers even teamed up with Sancho Panza this year
at Notting Hill Carnival, and together released a pair of exclusive, limited
edition shoes.
It seems that with Kickers new and individual range, exciting collaborations
and funky remixes, they are going to be a bit unstoppable this year!
So don’t let the last days of summer be taken over by stresses of
school uniform and school shoes. With all that’s going on at Kickers
it seems you’d be silly to get left behind.
The Real Fashion Heat™/ Text
/ Chloe Forde 2nd September 2008
The Fashion team at The Cut magazine are always looking
out for new and exciting designers to include in their fashion shoots.
This issues ‘Road to Carnival’ shoot showcases 5 pages of
creative, vibrant and bright outfits. With clothes ranging from established
brands such as Lyle and Scott, Adidas and Primark complimented by the
work of up and coming designers like
When collecting clothes for the photo shoot we came across a young, innovate
designer who goes by the name Danielle Abena Scott-Haughton AKA DanDan
AKA Cut&Swallow. This breath of fresh air is very articulate; she
knows what she wants and what she needs to do in order to achieve this.
On page 48 of The Cut magazine, a multi-coloured, tiered ruffled mini
dress modeled by the beautiful Miggy doesn’t look of any less quality
or style than the vintage Adidas jacket that it’s teamed with. DanDan
has been designing for little over a year and is wise beyond her years.
A student at the prestigious London College of Fashion, the college which
she describes as ‘just another brand name…it’s like
buying a Vivienne Westwood bag, it will last In your life forever but
the price you pay is dear.’
So I sit down to conversation and a coffee with Danielle and we talk fashion,
Kayne West, Yardies and massive breasts! So D, where do you draw inspiration
from? She doesn’t pause and begins to answer, always ready to express
herself, ‘Yardies! They are the nicest people you’ll ever
meet! I stop and think about the yardies I have encountered and can’t
recollect any mother Theresa type characters but allow her to continue.
‘I just love colours so when I see women like The Real Heat just
not giving a F***, I say “yeah! And go with that mode of thinking.’
I’m in awe of this young woman and feel inspired by her passion
and enthusiasm. She answers each question with a burst of energy. Dressed
in bright colours and bold jewelry which is complimented by a monochrome
(blonde and black) ‘fro I wonder what’s behind her unique
personal style? ‘My personal style is my personal style’,
she replies, looking at me blankly as if I had just asked her the most
obvious question ever! She continues, ‘God gave me massive breasts
and long thick Amazon legs, but not everyone has that, so I gotta make
stuff that suits all women, from the big sexy mamas, to the petite princesses.’
Her Amazon legs and massive breasts are laced in bright Lycra, cut of
jeans, high top trainers and fantastic accessories. Her nails are FABULOUSLY
bright. When she’s out, I’m told, she often hears people whispering
about her, crossing the street and looking at her with fear. I can’t
imagine feeling fearful with Dan, her voice is soft and she has an incredibly
caring manner about her. Perhaps its jealousy? Afterall, jealousy can
eat people alive. She laughs my comment off and goes on to compliment
Kesh’s collection, ‘I love Kesh's hustle, people hate on her
so much, she's the one who got me excited about the possibilities that
fashion had to offer a little black girl from London or Crawley in her
case.’
The interview comes to a close and she thanks me again
and again and over again for the opportunity and informs me that god is
setting the bar high, showing her the levels! Well Miss Haughton, a fabulous
young woman from Brixton, with innovative designs, infectious charisma
and fingernails that would give a yardie a run for their money has just
really excited me about the possibilities of what she has to offer to
fashion!
Orange Rock Corps™/ Text
/ Ronnie Grebenyuk 1st September 2008
On 26th of September there is an event taking place at
Royal Albert Hall that you do not want to miss! The hottest gig of the
year with the likes of Busta Rhymes, The Guillemots and many many more,
yet to be confirmed. But you can’t buy a ticket or win a ticket
you have to earn it. This is where Orange Rock Corps comes in; they are
about you giving back to your community, working as a team and transforming
and rebuilding your local area. All you have to do is give 4 hours of
your time to the community with one of the volunteer projects and you
get given one ticket to the biggest gig.
Last week in the early hours of the morning the Cut went down to East
London, Brick Lane to check out Orange Rock Corps and to do a bit of volunteering.
Although we got a bit lost on the way, when we finally got there we signed
in, were given the T-shirts, and got put into groups for different work
areas of the building. Our main task was re-decorating and painting The
Peter Rigby House which will be launched in September as a centre for
the homeless. It was great to see all the young people come from different
parts of the City and working as a team to get the job done with the only
4 given hours . Throughout the day Alex Zane and T4 crew were going around
Hoxton Hall filming and interviewing people, getting an insight to what
the volunteers were doing. When Alex Zane finally came to check up on
us, he got the biggest make over with paint all over his (expensive) leather
jacket, there was just no way out for him. So funny. Anyways the four
hours went by incredibly fast, as well as it felt good giving back to
the community, we all had a fun day as well and went away with our
tickets for the gig.

Autechre Live in London ™ Exhibition / Text / Steve NoSurname 4th March 2008
''Autechre''. / Not a word that inspires excitement (or even any kind of response) in most people, but to some - and believe me, there are quite a few - they represent the kind of exploding electro-funk-noise that has gone on to influence such stars as Radiohead. Tonight, in an old car park tucked behind Liverpool Street station (of all places), any preconceptions about the band anyone could possibly have were smashed to pieces. Read The Full Article Here

We Know Famous People™ David Lynch / Text / Zainab Adamu 1st March 2008
Hundreds of fans and journalists turned out to London’s Institute of Education to hear David Lynch talk about transcendental meditation.
As an aspiring filmmaker, meeting David Lynch was the peak of my young career in film. Although Lynch was there to promote his
spiritual work in transcendental meditation he didn’t hesitate to answer questions on his films. After the press conferences my
colleague Cathy and I waited anxiously for an interview. I sat and anticipated the perfect question. Luckily we even shared an elevator
with the man himself. After watching Lynch being swamped by press and fans, Bob Roth, vice-president of the David Lynch Foundation
managed to get us a quick interview in which I asked him how transcendental meditation could benefit young aspiring filmmakers like myself. His answer was clear; meditation is the best way to rid fear, stress and anxiety making more room for creativity. Sounded good to me... and who better to take inspiration from than such a pioneering filmmaker? Read the extended article in the next edition of The Cut.
